For over 50 years, the Calvey family on Achill have been producing the most exquisitely tasting lamb from their extensive farm in Achill Island, creating a unique, handcrafted and genuine product of Achill Island lamb,  that is their very own trademarked Achill Mountain Lamb.

A rare quality in the meat market today, all Achill Mountain Lamb is bred, raised and butchered in Achill and is 100% traceable from the Calveys family own farm, abattoir and butchers. Calveys flock of sheep and rams are genuine pure-bred Mayo Blackface Mountain breed. Their flock of sheep have evolved in Achill down through generations of the Calvey family into the Achill Island lamb we know today.

 Martin Calvey started the Calvey business in the early sixties when he began butchering and creating the brand Achill Mountain Lamb. He has been selectively breeding his unique flock using exactly the same artisan skills Calveys use today to guarantee the finest quality lamb.

When deemed ready by Martin’s expert hand, the lambs are traditionally butchered and crafted in the family-owned and run Calveys Abattoir & Butchers. Calveys breed to give their Achill Lamb high quality lean carcases, healthy pinky red in colour, with a firm, deep texture and a very light skim of yellowish fat (more flavour than white) with marbling throughout, ensuring a unique, delicate and succulent flavour when cooked.

“Over many, many years, our sheep have grazed freely on thousands of hectares of open Achill landscape and on part of the Wild Atlantic Way where the sea mist lingers. They feed entirely on a natural diet of mother’s milk, the natural forage of heathers, wild grasses and herbs.
